FINDING A PUPPY If you are prepared to cope with the possible problems listed above then the next step, if you have only seen pictures of the breed, should be to either attend a dog show where the breed is being exhibited or arrange to visit someone who already owns a Pyrenean or, better still, has several. If you don't already know someone in the breed then contact the Club Secretary (see Committee for details) and she will be able to put you in contact with a Pyrenean owner in your area. Never consider buying a puppy from anyone other than its breeder and don't feel sorry for that winsome little bundle you may see in a Pet Shop window. If so you may find yourself bearing the financial burden of Vet's fees for the rest of its life, or not being able to cope when an unstable temperament rears its ugly head. Naturally
most newcomers to a breed want to buy a puppy but if you
have owned a large breed and If you have been to a show or visited a Pyrenean owner then it shouldn't be difficult to find a litter of pups although there are times when there are very few litters around and you may have to be prepared to travel long distances. When possible try to see a few litters before deciding but although this is good advice, if you have set your heart on owning a Pyrenean and haven't had one before you are unlikely to go home without a puppy when you visit your first litter (assuming that they are old enough to leave). A caring breeder will be prepared to spend time answering your questions about the breed and be interested in the future well-being of the puppy. If the breeder you have chosen cannot be bothered to do this and only seems intent on taking your money then you should think seriously about taking a puppy, even though it my be hard to resist. You are perfectly within your rights to seek a reference for the breeder you have chosen, just as the breeder is entitled to either visit your home, or send someone on their behalf to ensure that you are a suitable owner for a Pyrenean. |
